Nora is a pessimistic mechanical engineer at the deep-sea drilling facility Kepler in the Mariana Trench. One day, disaster strikes when a strong earthquake causes a pressure breach, leaving many of the station’s crew dead. With only a half hour to evacuate before the whole station explodes, Nora and a small group of survivors gear up for a seafloor walk to the next station where escape pods await to take them to the surface. The deadly water pressure is not all that threatens the remaining crew, though, as mysterious creatures soon attack, killing several more people. By the time they make it to the escape pods, just Nora and two other survivors remain…but so does one more massive danger: a giant Cthulhu-esque creature! In a final act of heroic sacrifice, Nora stays behind and overloads the station’s engine core – destroying the monster and allowing the other survivors to reach the surface.

Still Alice
Lydia Howland is an aspiring actress living in Los Angeles with two roommates, working her way through the local theater scene. One day, her mother, a linguistics professor at Columbia, visits and takes her out for lunch, where she asks Lydia about reconsidering her career path. While visiting her family for Christmas, Lydia notices that her mother, Alice, is having trouble remembering people she just met. Lydia and her siblings later learn this is a symptom of Alice’s early onset Alzheimer’s disease, which in this case is familial. Her siblings both get tested for the disease, but Lydia chooses not to find out if she’ll one day suffer the effects of Alzheimer’s. Lydia visits again while in town for a play, joining Alice for walk and talk about the future, where Alice again pushes Lydia about her career options. During a family dinner, Lydia argues with her sister about how best to help Alice deal with the disease and the related stress. After her mother decides to give a speech at an Alzheimer’s conference, Lydia encourages Alice to incorporate more of her personal voice to the speech. Alice does and the speech is very well received. As Alice’s condition worsens, Lydia moves in to help take care of her – spending the days out on walks with her and reading to her plays about love.

Clouds of Sils Maria
Valentine is the personal assistant to Maria Enders, an actress traveling to accept an award on behalf of reclusive playwright Wilhelm Melchior, whose play was Enders’ breakout role. En route to Zurich, Valentine and Maria get word that Wilhelm has died. While at the award ceremony-turned-memorial, Valentine convinces Maria to meet with a director about returning to the play that made her famous. Over the next several weeks, Valentine helps Maria prepare for the role, running lines and exchanging ideas about the themes and meaning of the play. Their perspectives differ on many things, including the potential of the actress set to play the role a younger Maria once did. One day, while on a hike, Valentine and Maria are arguing once more over the play and interpretations of it… then Valentine vanishes, never to be seen by Maria again.
