Gracie is a peppy, pearl-necklace-wearing college student who is interested in super lower middle class Darren. Unfortunately, Darren is hard up for funds and on academic probation so their time together isn’t exactly filled with fun dates. It becomes clear that Darren is going through a very hard time when he isn’t even able to go for a walk due to having sold his winter coat for cash to pay his tuition. Gracie becomes suspicious of Darren’s behavior when she begins hearing rumors that Darren is selling drugs. One night, she calls him and pretends to be some rando looking for an Ecstasy hookup and when he confirms that he has some pills available she catches him. Gracie does forgive him and in the end is finally able to go on that walk with Darren and they take a selfie together with a disposable camera- Gracie thinks in a cute, couple way, but Darren has ulterior motives to assuage his parents fears and prove that he is not gay.

Mary Lane is a true E-flat Dillinger! Living in a world of moldy figs, Mary Lane is a good girl who is basically the American Standard when it comes to being an upstanding citizen. That is until her boyfriend, Jimmy, begins acting suspicious. One night, Jimmy comes to her window and wakes her up. He acknowledges that he’s been acting odd – even admitting to gaining weight when he tries to give her his class ring and can’t get it off his finger –  but Mary doesn’t care. They reaffirm their relationship- comparing themselves to another pair of star crossed lovers (Romeo & Juliet) – and Mary promises to run away with him. When she returns from packing, Jimmy is being swept away in a strange car and so she follows. Unbeknownst to her, she winds up at the dope den where Jimmy has been partaking in reefer! There she meets Ralph who she THINKS is a suave college frat boy and he convinces her to try her first joint, though she believes it to be a cigarette. From there she devolves into an S&M version of herself, humping and whipping and slapping Ralph around, now totally addicted to the giggle smokes. In a haze, Mary Lane is shot that night when the den master returns and draws his gun to stop a fight between Ralph and Jimmy. Mary Lane immediately goes to hell, has inappropriate relations with the devil and then is later admitted into heaven.

Laura Newton is the neglected daughter of a high ranking US official. She is captured by a sex slavery ring based out of Dubai and waits to be rescued. Back home in the US, Laura is declared as dead. Eventually, clever Robert Scott, a Delta Force soldier finds her and concocts a plan using shipping containers to get her out of the country. Before the evening of the escape, they lay low at a safe house and Laura confides in Robert that her father – the high ranking US official – never had her best interests at heart. Her father was the one who pulled her security detail the night of her kidnapping to protect himself during one of his multiple extramarital affairs. Later that night, everything goes sideways during the escape to the shipping containers when it turns out that Robert has been tracked by his own team, sent to sabotage the rescue mission to protect the president from the bad press this will bring. A fight ensues between the soldiers as a Swedish news crew watches. Laura is able to get to the news crew and get out of danger leaving Robert injured at an airport hanger. In the end, Laura is reunited with her father and he is hailed as a politician who is cracking down on sex trafficking.

Gracie Thompson is a street urchin-like young lady who has to pick up the slack of her addict mother. She becomes the head of household (along with her grandma) for her four younger half siblings while her mother jumps from one toxic relationship to the next and does a stint in jail. After beginning a new relationship, finding advocates in the school staff and taking on a job, Gracie begins to find some stability in her life, but when her mother shows back up and browbeats her grandma into giving up the caretaker funds, Gracie sues for her emancipation and caretaking rights for her brothers (her sister gets pregnant and moves in with her boyfriend) and begins life balancing a relationship, the needs of young children, her job – she gets promoted! – and school. Somehow she manages to do it and in the end battles it out in court to formally adopt her brothers. With her mother’s parental rights revoked, the judge grants Gracie the adoption of her brothers. They walk out of the court with each other and a new last name: the Weatherlys. Because they’ve weathered a lot of storms together.
