Still Alice
Lydia Howland is an aspiring actress living in Los Angeles with two roommates, working her way through the local theater scene. One day, her mother, a linguistics professor at Columbia, visits and takes her out for lunch, where she asks Lydia about reconsidering her career path. While visiting her family for Christmas, Lydia notices that her mother, Alice, is having trouble remembering people she just met. Lydia and her siblings later learn this is a symptom of Alice’s early onset Alzheimer’s disease, which in this case is familial. Her siblings both get tested for the disease, but Lydia chooses not to find out if she’ll one day suffer the effects of Alzheimer’s. Lydia visits again while in town for a play, joining Alice for walk and talk about the future, where Alice again pushes Lydia about her career options. During a family dinner, Lydia argues with her sister about how best to help Alice deal with the disease and the related stress. After her mother decides to give a speech at an Alzheimer’s conference, Lydia encourages Alice to incorporate more of her personal voice to the speech. Alice does and the speech is very well received. As Alice’s condition worsens, Lydia moves in to help take care of her – spending the days out on walks with her and reading to her plays about love.
