Abby isn’t particularly excited by the Christmas season, despite the efforts of her long term girlfriend, Harper. One night, after some troublemaking in Pittsburgh, Abby – who is on the verge of proposing – accepts Harper’s invitation to come home with her for Christmas and meet her family.
Abby’s expectations for the holiday are soon upended, though, when Harper reveals that she’s not yet come out as gay to her family and, due to her father’s political aspirations, doesn’t feel like she can do so until after the holidays. Abby, who now must pretend to be Harper’s straight roommate, finds herself entangled in a web of lies and begins questioning whether Harper is truly the right person for her.
After tensions and secrets boil over at the family white elephant gift exchange, and Harper denies their relationship, Abby decides to break things off and return to Pittsburgh.
While refueling at a gas station, Abby is confronted by a contrite Harper, who reveals she has finally come out to her family and is ready to put the work in to make things right with Abby. Abby agrees to take her back and, one year later, the two are part of one big happy family.
